Pre-Speech Language Pathology

Main Content

Speech-language pathologists diagnose, evaluate, and treat communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. A degree in speech language pathology opens the door to teaching, clinical, and research opportunities in the field of human communication disorders. It is a demanding field that requires specialized knowledge and the ability to deal with the emotional needs of patients.

To become a speech language pathologist, students must complete a graduate program in speech language pathology accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation. The most common pathway leading to a speech language pathology graduate program is by completing a Communication Disorders & Sciences undergraduate degree, but alternatives are available here at SIU. For students who lack the pre-requisites necessary for direct-entry into a graduate program, SIU offers a one-year leveling program to get you graduate-school ready.
